On the October 12, CTT presented a philatelic issue that marks the centenary of the beginning of the first piloting course at Granja do Marquês, in Sintra, between the sea and the mountains.

The Military Aviation School of Vila Nova da Rainha, transferred on February 20, 1920 to Sintra started the activity of instruction, where many were able to carry out their military vocation, reaching unique capabilities and where many crew members could make their dream come true In 1939 , as a result of the reorganization of Aeronautics, it was designated Air Base No. 1. The School accumulated experience, knowledge and aeronautical knowledge in its multiple facets, contributed to the training of the first civilian pilots in Portugal and represented an increased capital of Military Aeronautics for its transformation into the Portuguese Air Force in 1952.

Granja do Marquês has followed the evolution of aviation over these 100 years, becoming a reference, due to the specificity of the Instruction and Teaching, Operations and Heritage components, being represented for this very reason, in this philatelic issue that CTT today presents.

According to Lieutenant-General, António Mimoso e Carvalho, “the Granja do Marquês for its honorable past and experiences, constitutes itself as an unavoidable intangible heritage, due to the repository of principles and value chain, Air Force identity reference standards, through the Air Base No. 1 as the depository of historical heritage and heir to the aeronautical traditions of the Military Aviation / Portuguese Air Force in Sintra, the Air Force Academy and the Air Museum. As a mythical aeronautical space as it continues to forge the spirit of Mission in new generations, it maintains and elevates what unites and distinguishes it, ensuring a transcendent value that can be transmitted to the future. ”

This philatelic issue consists of two stamps with a circulation of 100,000 copies each and the face values of € 0.53 and € 1.00 and a philatelic block with a stamp with a circulation of 35,000 copies and the value of 2 , € 5.
