O caravelão (caravela de dois mastros) era ideal para o "descobrimento de costa". Por possuir apenas dois mastros e velas latinas, oferecia uma agilidade superior para bolinar em canais estreitos. O seu baixo calado permitia sondar baixios e entrar em barras de rios sem encalhar, onde as naus falhavam. Era uma embarcação leve, de pequena tonelagem, que facilitava manobras rápidas perante correntes desconhecidas ou ventos variáveis junto à terra, sendo o instrumento perfeito para o reconhecimento hidrográfico.
