Philately Exhibition April 25 - 51 years at the Lyceu de Faro Library and Online Collecting Exhibition on the blog Os Amigos da Filatelia
The Revolution of April 25, 1974 marked the beginning of democratic life in Portugal. The insurrection, carried out by the military of the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), ended the authoritarian regime that had governed the country since 1926. This event demonstrated that it was possible to end the colonial war and pave the way for democratization and national development.
The Carnation Revolution has been the theme of postage stamps issued in Portugal on several occasions: 1974, 1975, 1984, 1994, 1999, 2004, and 2014. In 2024, the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the Revolution, CTT Correios de Portugal decided to continue celebrating this crucial moment in the country's modern history through Republic stamps.
To mark this event, the memory of the Revolution was revisited with a joint stamp issue with the Postal Services of Angola and Cape Verde, which also decided to join this significant celebration for their countries. One of the priorities of the revolutionary forces was the independence of the Portuguese colonies in Africa.
April 25 brought full democracy and freedom. Independence came to the "overseas territories," driven by the inevitable course of modern history, but was precipitated by the Revolution of 1974.
Similar to what happened last year, the friends of philately accepted the challenge launched by the Lyceu de Faro Museum, and collectors Luís Braz and José Belchior presented their collections on this theme to illustrate this important date to the educational community of the João de Deus School Group.
However, as has been our custom, we decided to share some of the material we have recently published on the blog Museu de Filatelia de Portugal, as well as other collections that, due to their theme, are important to be remembered.
