O caravelão ou caravela de dois mastros
O caravelão ou caravela de dois mastros, era equipada com o inovador pano latino (triangular), foi o instrumento decisivo da expansão portuguesa no século XV. Esta configuração era a preferida para a exploração da costa africana e o reconhecimento inicial dos arquipélagos atlânticos devido à sua agilidade superior. Mais leve e maneável do que as barcas precedentes, permitia "bolinar" — navegar contra a direção do vento —, uma capacidade vital para o regresso ao continente.
A estrutura simplificada de dois mastros exigia uma tripulação reduzida, cerca de 20 homens, o que otimizava os mantimentos para viagens longas. Além disso, o seu baixo calado permitia a aproximação segura a zonas costeiras desconhecidas e a exploração de estuários e rios, onde navios maiores encalhariam facilmente.

O Amerigo Vespucci é conhecido como o navio mais belo do mundo. Construído em 1931, este veleiro da Marinha Italiana funciona como um navio-escola para cadetes. Com o seu casco preto e branco, que lembra os antigos navios de linha do século XIX, ele preserva a elegância da navegação tradicional. É um símbolo de prestígio e da rica história marítima de Itália.
